Guest editor SERIES: Julia Leach on the T-shirt uniform

The designer of cult striped-tee line, Chance (@julia_chance), Julia Leach has a signature style which is part East Coast prep, part laissez-faire French girl--all enviable effortless chic. And all about t-shirts: "I can’t think of any other item of clothing that’s as versatile," she tells us.

For this week of tees we asked the LA-based, jet-setting, creative director with exacting taste to share her t-shirt-centric uniforms for every occasion.

My work uniform is tees, jackets, jeans, and heels; day in, day out. Simple bold accessories give the look personality. I like the drape of this soft Splendid t-shirt for work because it’s not too fitted and there’s an elegance to the neckline.

I go to the farmer’s market every Sunday, usually in Hollywood. Afterwards, it’s brunch, a museum, into the studio — so I throw on something casual with a little polish. I love Madewell’s tomboy sensibility; this tee has a flattering open front (but not too open). I layer a bomber jacket over it for cool LA mornings.

For night, I like a more fitted tee, and this one has a particularly great scoop neck (showing just enough skin).  Again, part of my uniform is bold silver jewelry, which is in regular rotation.

Chance was inspired largely by my love of travel and the sea, so my suitcase always contains several of the tees from various collections.  My Signature Boatneck is my go-to because the navy base travels well (doesn’t show wrinkles as much, and I can get away with wearing it a couple of days in a row without washing).  It can also work in all climates—warm, of course, and cool under sweaters and blazers.

I travel a lot, and having a uniform for trips, short and long, is a big time saver. While I don’t think dressing up is necessary for flights, putting a bit of effort in is.  I love a good thermal tee for the place, both for comfort and because they don’t look wrinkled. This one is great because it’s two t-shirts in one.
